Alitalo Winery

The Alitalo farm is a medium-sized Neolithic farm dating back to the 1500s. The winery was opened to the public in 1996, and tourism has boomed over the years. Especially in summer, the magnificent nature of Lohjansaari, the farm's cultivated fields and forests of thousands of apple trees create a wonderful setting for day-trippers and groups, right on the outskirts of the capital region!

The farm grows apples and produces a variety of wines, ciders and liqueurs. Over the years, the entrepreneurial couple Sanna and Marko Maula have developed several new and local products, with a special focus on quality and domestic ingredients. All our products are handcrafted in Lohjansaari and offer a unique tasting experience to our visitors.

The Viders and ciders

Our own signature products, the Viiders, have grown in popularity over the years. What distinguishes ciders from ciders is that no apple is used in their production. In other words, ciders are "berry ciders". Only drinks made from apples can be called cider.

Our range also includes traditional apple ciders, made from apples grown on our own farm through spontaneous fermentation. The ciders are filtered. They are produced at different times and due to their popularity, we cannot guarantee that all of them are available on the farm.

The Alitalo farm has 4.5 ha of nature reserves. The areas are adjacent to the Kynnepää grove, owned by the Natural Heritage Foundation. https://luonnonperintosaatio.fi/suojelualue/kynnepaa/

The Alitalo and Kynnepää nature reserves represent a forest environment where biodiversity is at its peak in Finland. It is a kind of domestic biodiversity hotspot.

The Alitalo farm is located in the hemiboreal climate zone in the Lohjansaari, where there are still plenty of deciduous areas on the fertile land. The famous Paavola oak tree is located one and a half kilometres to the south and Karkali Nature Park is five kilometres across the strait.

The nature reserve is mainly fresh, rich and dry deciduous woodland, with mature deciduous trees as overstory. The understory of deciduous trees is so dense in places that the field layer is almost absent. Two-layered structure may be the result of forest grazing that ceased at some point. According to the vendor, the area has not been subject to forestry operations for at least forty years.

The area is home to sturdy oaks and maples, walnut bushes and trunkless ash trees here and there. On the southern edge of the site there is an area of large ash trees, and a stand of ash trees is left adjacent to the site. The area contains perhaps five to ten cubic metres of decayed wood per hectare. The deciduous shrubs in the area include larch, witch hazel and currant. The field layer is dominated by lily of the valley, blue vetch and blackcurrant. Apple tree, mahogany and a stand of yellow pine, which is a reminder of a house that once stood on the site but of which nothing now remains.

Alitalo's forests are FSC-certified.
